Politics in Action: Ninth Graders Discuss Education, Democracy, and Future Issues

Students from two ninth-grade classes gained a special insight into political decision-making processes during a visit from CDU member of the state parliament Dr. Albrecht Schütte at the Kurpfalz Internat. The member of parliament, who is also part of the Bammental municipal council, took ample time for an open and lively exchange – and addressed the various questions from the youth.

Education in Focus: Foreign Languages, Federalism, and School Structures

One topic that particularly occupied the students was education federalism. They wanted to know why in Baden-Württemberg primarily French or Latin is offered as a second foreign language, while other federal states allow more choices – such as Spanish. Dr. Schütte explained the historical and geographical proximity to France as a reason for this tradition, but expressed understanding for the desire for more flexibility. He promised to bring the issue to the political committees.

The question of G8 and G9 was also discussed vigorously. The young people were interested in whether a longer educational program could actually contribute to more stress reduction and better learning quality. Dr. Schütte assessed the political debates and current developments and emphasized the importance of sustainable educational decisions.

Questions of the Future: Political Apathy, Conscription, Religion, and AI

In the further conversation, it became clear how broad the political interest of our students is. They asked about ways to engage young people in politics, discussed the debate on mandatory military service, the role of religious education, and the impact of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Another major topic was Artificial Intelligence: the opportunities in education and work were contrasted with the risks to privacy and societal development. Dr. Schütte organized the topics, provided food for thought, and encouraged the young people to remain critical and interested.

A vibrant insight into political processes.

The visit impressively demonstrated how openly, reflectively, and curiously our students approach political questions. The direct dialogue with a member of parliament gave them the opportunity to share their own perspectives, receive informed answers, and experience politics not abstractly, but in a close and everyday context.
