Excursion to the Explore Science Fair

As part of the NwT lessons, classes 9a, 9b, and 9c of the high school took an excursion to the Explore Science fair in Mannheim’s Herzogenriedpark at the end of the school year.

The scientific experience days have been organized annually by the Klaus Tschira Foundation since 2006. The aim of the event is to inspire children and young people in the sciences and to give them the opportunity to explore phenomena themselves.

The offering was diverse and ranged from interactive exhibitions to hands-on stations and workshops, as well as stage shows and competitions. The students of the Kurpfalz boarding school participated in an exciting workshop on the topic of artificial intelligence and image recognition, among other activities. In two intensive hours, they learned the basics of AI, experimented with image data, and tested how machines can analyze and recognize images.

In addition to the workshop, the classes visited numerous interactive stations. At the Max Planck Institute booth, the young people built their own LED flashlights, which required both craftsmanship and an understanding of physics. At the BASF booth, various solar cells could be tested, giving the students exciting insights into renewable energy technologies. Particularly interesting was the visit to the CISPA Cysec Lab booth, where the young people engaged with the topic of cybersecurity and built simple circuits to playfully understand the fundamentals of IT security.

The excursion to the Explore Science fair provided the students with an ideal opportunity to experience scientific topics hands-on, try out new things, and get to know current research up close.
