Kurpfalz Boarding School on the Road: Excursion Report to the Zoo Academy Heidelberg
On February 24, 2025, the students of the K2 biology courses, accompanied by Dr. Hoffmann, visited the Zoo Academy Heidelberg to gain practical experience in the field of genetics. The aim of the excursion was to better understand and apply what was learned in class through exciting experiments.
The course consisted of two parts:
In the first part, the students worked on solving a fictional criminal case. A break-in at the zoo was to be solved using DNA analysis. For this, they compared DNA samples from suspects and from the crime scene using special methods – the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and subsequent gel electrophoresis. These techniques allow for individual differences in DNA to be made visible, enabling the identification of the perpetrator. During the experiment, the participants also learned how this technology is applied in research and conservation.
In the second part of the course, the students isolated their own DNA. They took cells from their oral mucosa, treated them with special chemicals, and were ultimately able to take home their DNA as a visible substance in a small container. This illustrated the structure of DNA and clarified its fundamental significance for every single cell in the body.
The five-hour event helped the students deepen their theoretical knowledge through practical work. In particular, the opportunity to use laboratory equipment and apply scientific methods excited the participants.
The excursion to the Zoo Academy Heidelberg was a valuable experience. The combination of theory and practice deepened the understanding of genetic methods. The clear presentation of the content, the independent experimentation, and the tangible application of the techniques were particularly positively received. Overall, the event was an exciting addition to biology classes and was a special experience for all participants.
