Visit to the wastewater treatment plant: Practical insights into the water cycle

Our ninth-grade classes visited the wastewater association Bammental as part of the “Material Cycles” lesson unit, commonly known as the sewage treatment plant. The goal of the outing was to provide the students with hands-on insights into natural cycles and the technology of wastewater treatment.

On-site, we were greeted by an experienced wastewater master who guided us through the facility in a tour lasting about 90 minutes. We received a detailed overview of the different stages of wastewater treatment. Starting with mechanical pre-treatment, through biological purification, to sludge treatment, the expert clearly explained how wastewater is cleaned and processed.

Particularly exciting for the students of the Kurpfalz boarding school was the use of modern technologies and the central importance of the wastewater treatment plant for environmental protection and resource conservation. We were able to witness on-site how the wastewater is routed through the various stations of the facility and is gradually cleansed of dirt and suspended solids.

The students took the opportunity to ask numerous questions, thereby deepening their theoretical knowledge from class in a concrete way. The visit to the wastewater treatment plant was an educational experience for everyone involved and provided a successful conclusion to the unit of instruction.

Many students were impressed by the technology and the enormous importance of wastewater treatment for the environment and society.
