School at the Kurpfalz Boarding School
Learning how to learn as a key qualification for a successful future
Many students have never learned how to learn properly. On the one hand, most schools pay little attention to teaching efficient learning techniques, organizing one’s own learning, fostering structured thinking, and supervising homework. On the other hand, students in large classes can often avoid the demands placed upon them. Ultimately, many are left alone with their problems.

Learning to learn
In our classes with a maximum of ten students, we place great importance on conveying a solid learning methodology. Homework is regularly checked and corrected by the teachers, with any misunderstandings explained immediately. Everyone is supported and challenged.
At the beginning of the school year, we create an individual foundational profile for all students using competency tests in key subjects. For children who join during the school year, this is done at the beginning of the second semester. Weaknesses in text comprehension and a lack of knowledge of learning techniques are recorded, along with spelling problems and possible mathematical deficits, such as in fraction calculations.
For grades 7 and 8, we conduct our specially designed teaching unit “Learning to Learn” in several modules at the beginning of the school year. Based on practical experiences, a curriculum has been developed that prepares students to meet academic requirements through to higher grades.
This includes, among other things, the examination of one’s own goals, strategies for concentration, learning techniques, and structured notebook management. In addition, the preparation for class tests is practiced. Older students also find suitable learning strategies after the compulsory learning type testing for all KPI students and a detailed discussion of the results in their materials, allowing them to test and apply methods that work for them.
During the two method weeks spread throughout the school year, the German department particularly intensifies various techniques for reading and understanding texts, as well as for properly handling assignments. These important key competencies are taken up and reinforced in all subjects to anchor them in the long term – not only for academic success.

Learning with enthusiasm
At the Kurpfalz Boarding School, we aim to inspire our students with a passion for learning. They should recognize that in a modern knowledge society, learning is never complete, but accompanies us throughout our lives. Our teachers support this process through praise, recognition, and by setting achievable goals.
In our summer school, as well as in accompanying modules and theme days on learning techniques and time management, long-standing issues that have been maintained over many school years are systematically addressed. The small classes and close contact with teachers create an efficient and motivating working atmosphere. The trusting relationship between teachers and students fosters the willingness to actively participate in class. After years in an overcrowded class, many experience something new: school can be fun!
If it becomes clear that students are not fully realizing their potential at their current school, we recommend an early transfer to our institution.
Responsible parents thus avoid the psychological burdens caused by increasing performance pressure, fear of failure, or looming setbacks. Our flexible school concept allows us to enroll students during the school year, provided a spot is available.
Our educational team is supported by an experienced school psychologist. She develops concepts to combat learning blocks and exam anxiety together with affected students.
Gaps that are brought to the Kurpfalz boarding school can usually be purposefully addressed by our experienced teachers and the in-house tutoring team.
Our students also use digital tools for learning—guided by their subject teachers—to close individual gaps. These offerings help children and adolescents to develop learning strategies, improve their work organization, and take responsibility for their learning process independently.
